Yacht Carpet Cleaning Tips: Stain Removal

Working with both private and commercial yachts in major ports such as Monaco, Antibes, Genoa, Barcelona and St Martin, we have identified some of the most common stains and problems that you’re likely to encounter during the yacht charter season. Our specialist cleaning teams have removed stubborn red wine stains, coffee and food stains as well makeup and cosmetic products.

But what are the secrets to maintaining the perfect yacht carpet and how do we go about removing troublesome stains?

Removing Coffee Stains

Coffee spills are inevitable when you’re running a busy charter yacht but there’s no reason to fret. There are multiple ways to remove coffee stains from yacht upholstery and fabrics.

Firstly, it’s best to treat a coffee spill on your carpet while it’s still wet by blotting it up with a clean cloth, moving inward to prevent the colour from seeping to surrounding fibres.

Next, we recommend using a professional cleaning product that is specifically designed to eliminate tough stains and remove unpleasant odours.

Which cleaning products are suitable for carpets?

Although you can sometimes remove coffee stains using supplies that you already have in the galley (e.g. liquid dish soap, white vinegar and water) it’s always best to call in the experts. That way you can ensure particularly stubborn coffee stains are removed successfully without damaging the yacht carpet.

Also, it’s important to check the carpet manufacturer’s recommendations and/or test any treatments in hidden areas before applying them to the stained area – that’s where we come in.

Sugar or cream?

If your charter guests spill a rich, creamy or milky coffee, are cleaning team will use an enzymatic carpet cleaner – Enzymatic cleaners work hard to break down the protein components in the stain and remove them completely rather than just masking them.

Relaxing on the main deck is a perfect way to unwind at the end of a busy charter day. But natural body oils, perfume and makeup can rub off your skin and transfer onto the yacht upholstery, leaving unsightly stains.

Removing Makeup Stains

When removing tough makeup stains, it’s vital that you address both the oil, colour and/or pigment to ensure a thorough clean.

Our specialist cleaning teams always start by removing any excess liquid, taking special care not to rub any makeup further into the fabric as this can make it even harder to remove!

Then, we treat the stained area with a professional cleaning solution that uses the power of a colour-safe, oxygen-powered stain fighter to help break down and remove makeup stains.

Makeup stains

We never apply cleaning solutions directly onto the upholstery stain, as this can actually worsen the stain. Instead, we apply our cleaning products directly onto a microfibre cloth and use it to blot the stain, continuing to apply the solution to the cloth and the cloth to the upholstery until the stain is no longer visible.

Removing Red Wine Stains

At Inter-Nett, we have a love-hate relationship with red wine. We love the bold, fruity taste of a classic Merlot but hate the red pigments that can stain just about anything, from furniture to rugs to premium yacht upholstery.

So, how do we deal with stubborn red wine stains?

When an inevitable spill happens, we always recommend that should act fast and start blotting (not rubbing!) the spillage with an absorbent cloth or dry paper towel – this will ensure the wine pigments do not set into the fibres too quickly. Then, call in the EXPERTS!

What’s next?

A professional cleaning company will saturate the stain with an approved stain remover, which has been specifically formulated to remove most red wine stains from carpets, upholstery and fabrics. Then, any extra residue will be removed with a clean, damp cloth.

Fabric protection

If spills and stains are a common occurrence on your private or commercial superyacht, we recommend treating your upholstery and fabrics with a professional water shield to make stain removal a lot easier in the future.
